Checking In

Posted by Lisa Laree to Beer Lahai Roi

Y'all tomorrow is the first free Saturday I've had since August 31st.  It's been a crazy, crazy couple of months.

I am planning to pick back up with the desert digging posts next Friday.

Hopefully by then I will have the laundry caught up and the seasonal clothes switched around, lol.

But here's a snippet of the last two weeks, for what it's worth...

Moonrise over the farm in Indiana...

We were home celebrating my Mom's birthday
The next weekend found us in northeastern Tennessee; My Sweet
Babboo was at a FCF Rendezvous, camping at a state park; I hung out with a couple of high school buddies; one happened to live there; the other drove down.  First time we'd all three been together since 1982.

This weekend we celebrated his birthday; beef'n'noodles and carrot cake...

The next 8 weeks may be consumed by Christmas production costuming; I'm hoping most can be thrifted but we will have to see.  But tomorrow...I am not setting the alarm clock!

Birthday Snapshots

Posted by Lisa Laree to Beer Lahai Roi
That picture was taken, um, 57 years ago today.

That's a long time ago.
The world has changed a lot since that picture was taken.
Notice the open window...that would be closed today.  Central heat and air were not common in 1960.  At least not in rural Indiana.
Ike was still POTUS.
My parents were on a party line.
They had a small black and white TV...that got 4 local channels; one independent (channel 4...which is now, I believe, a Fox affiliate) and the three major networks, although I can't remember for sure which of channels 6, 8, and 13 were which.
The stations all signed off at night.
There was a test pattern on after hours.
It was kind of creepy.
The space race was heating up.
Car seats were just padded crates that hung over the seat so the kid could see out.
Seat belts were not yet standard equipment.
Gas stations had attendants that pumped your gas, washed your windows and checked your oil.
Folks dressed up to go out.
County roads were mostly unpaved.
Cars didn't have A/C either.  They had these weird vent windows that levered out to catch the breeze and blow it on the driver and front passenger.
Moms left kids in the car while making a quick run into the dry cleaners or post office or bank without a second thought.
She also always draped toilet paper over the seat in a public restroom before making use of it...or allowing one of her kids to make use of it.
Coffee was always percolated.
And served in 8 ounce cups on saucers.
Christmas stockings that we hung on Christmas eve were actual socks.  That we wore.
Santa arrived in the stores on the day after Thanksgiving.  Which was when the stores were suddenly and magically decorated with Christmas trimmings.
I had some of the same teachers in elementary school that my mother had.  They frequently called me by her name.
We rode in the back of the truck all the time.  Or on the fender of the tractor.  My dad often says it's a wonder any of us grew up (hashtag sarcasm).
A computer with the power of the calculator sitting on my desk would take up an entire room.
My dad didn't have a computer sitting on his desk.  He had a slide rule.
After a while, he had an adding machine.
I remember smells....the way the bank smelled (was that money?); the way the library smelled; the way the bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken smelled as we carried it home...about a half an hour drive from the nearest restaurant.  At which we only stopped if we happened to be headed home from the city and going by at the opportune moment.  The way the stubby lopsided Christmas trees smelled.  The way Grandma's shellout beans smelled as they warmed up for about the third time.  The way new-cut hay smelled.
The days were slow, but never long enough.  I hated napping and going to bed at night.  I might miss something.
This is nothing like the post I wanted to write.  But maybe it was the one I needed to write.
Nostalgia is good from time to time.
And a birthday is a good time to be nostalgic.

Master's is DONE!

Posted by Lisa Laree to Beer Lahai Roi

Three weeks is long enough to go without posting...something...

I have officially finished my online master's degree.

I feel like I should put an asterisk by that, with a footnote stating that I don't think I did coursework comparable to attending a brick-and-mortar campus.

I think the institution from which I am receiving the degree is changing and plans to make much use of social media to increase the workload, so I probably got through easier than those who will follow.

Not sure how accomplished I feel.

The only class that was a drag was the one in which I had to read a handbook of weddings and funerals.

The wedding ceremonies were nice, and some had very touching, creative bits.

But there were way more funeral samples.  How many funerals can you read before a dark cloud descends?

Some were about aged saints who went home to glory and left grand legacies.  Those were inspiring.

But the rest...oy.

Was glad to finish that one.

The textbook I was least impressed with was the last one...an overview of the entire Bible and Apocrypha.

The author wrote two or three points that were just plain wrong.  As in, I don't know how those statements got past a proofreader.

But more than that, he couldn't seem to decide if he were writing to give evidence that the Bible is accurate or to cite folks who wanted to logically explain why it was inaccurate.

It felt...mushy.

Still, there were some good insights so it wasn't a total washout.

By and large, the year of study was good for me.  I commented to a friend that even if I have no benefit to either my career or ministry, I'm glad I did it because of what I gleaned personally.

And, as it turns out, there's going to be a 'graduation ceremony' during 3rd service on May 21. There have been a few folks who have finished varying levels of work and the head of the online school is coming, with full academic regalia, to confer degrees and such.

Not sure if I'm going to be in cap and gown (I don't even know what the protocol is for Master's level headgear) or not.

But my grad fee is paid and all is in order.

My creative had kind of shut down during the push to finish.

Hoping it has had a nice break and is ready to come back online now.

Snapshot 1/21/16

Posted by Lisa Laree to Beer Lahai Roi

Seriously?  The first Snapshots post since May of 2014?

I guess I've been a better blogger than I realize; since these are to  bridge the gap between an extended not-blogging period and getting back in the groove.

I am home today with no transportation.

The second car is in the shop because the front suspension is making alarming grating, creaking, grinding noises.

It may or may not have anything to do with the fact that the Actor apparently ran up onto a curb and then dropped off of it a couple of weeks ago.

We were not told this until yesterday.

Hoping it's just an alignment issue.

But I had already worked more than my allotted 48 hours in this pay period anyway.

Our annual Servant Leaders conference was last  weekend.

We had very nearly 1200 folks preregistered; that beat our old preregistration record by over 300.

It was incredible and I'm still going to be processing it for a while.  The sessions are supposed to be online soon; I intend to go back and watch them.

While I'm not preoccupied with registration logistics.

Meantime, I had signed up to take the part two class of the prayer ministry school offered at church.

I took part one last year and had no intentions whatsoever to take part 2.  There are some teachings by this particular curriculum that I find I just cannot accept.

But there's also a good bit of real instruction there.

Just before the deadline (actually, the day after the deadline; I had to turn the form back on to register...the advantages to being the data base admin) I decided that, since I wasn't committed to teaching or any other such thing at the moment, I might as well go for it and signed up.

I've already hit that issue that makes me shake my head really hard.

So I'm trying hard to dodge the issue without making a fuss in the discussion group.

But it's hard.  I'm just that bull-headed.  So maybe this is a good exercise in extending grace.

We are headed into the second of six Saturday seminars.  Surely I can push past the aggravation to get the benefit.

Maybe this is a good exercise in personal discipline.

All I know is...I didn't want to do this, yet I did.  So God must  have a purpose.  I'm not going to quit and so not see that.

I just hope the teeth gritting doesn't aggravate my TMJ. ;-)

I intend to pick back up with the New Beginnings series tomorrow.

I kinda feel like I've gone past New Beginnings at this point, but I will finish Genesis.  There'll be only a couple more  posts anyway.

I feel like my focus is shifting a bit from starting to investing/growth.  That'll be a post or two on its own.

See you tomorrow with one last look at Judah...

Snapshot 5/3/14

Posted by Lisa Laree to Beer Lahai Roi

Wishing I had profound things to share.

But life has been all about the immediate and necessary of late.

The week or two following Easter are quite intense, from the church-data-admin viewpoint.  Lots of data entry and follow up to record.  It's all good...but...not much time for reflection.

Plus I finished a big sewing project, as those of you who read the sewing blog know well.

Through a series of not-so-intentional events, the script that I have been praying over for, like, ever...the one that I fasted coffee for a year over...is now being read by someone in our area who Does Community Theater.

I should have a realistic and objective opinion on it...eventually.

We'll see what happens then.

The Flute Player was the passenger in a car involved in an accident late last night, coming home from a little socializing after a school event.  She's sore and bruised and somehow seems to have chipped some teeth.  The dental damage does not show, but she says she was spitting out grit for about ten minutes and she has some teeth that feel excessively sharp.  One or two are a bit sensitive.

We're icing down the bruises; if she still has dental issues once we hit the work week we'll call the dentist.

Nothing has changed on the changing and shifting; I'm still trying to sift through rumor and inuendo and hang on until I have acutal information about what's going on.

Meantime, I keep hearing one phrase in my spirit; "Finish Strong".

'Finish Strong' also means no complaining or fault finding.  It means handling it right...however it goes.

We have a couple of graduations in the next three weeks...our last high school graduation, and The Actor will graduate from his current internship position just two days before that.

It will be good to have him around again.  I've missed him.

Snapshot 12/9/13

posted by Lisa Laree to Beer Lahai Roi

Spent the past weekend chaperoning the theater performance/tech theater magnet kids to the state drama festival.

4th time to go to this campus, which is about 3.5 hours away.

The first time was in 2002.

I realized this year that my inner compass was off by 90 degrees once we were there.

I thought South was West.

It was about 2 AM before I got to bed on Sunday morning.

I was at church at 8.

I went to bed last night about 9.

Suddenly I'm very sleepy again.

The Flute Player still has homework to finish.

I found out that I have to use all my vacation by Dec. 31 or I lose it.

Guess who's going to be working short work weeks and taking an extended Christmas break?

Maybe I'll find the bottom of the laundry basket.

Or get the budget caught up.

Or sew something.

Or catch up on the Hebrews study...I'm two chapters behind.

We had our last official coaching  teleconference for the data base migration today.

I guess that means we are officially migrated.

I still have an awfully lot to learn.

I gave in and let them provide a laptop for me.

Which I am scared to take anywhere lest I lose it or break it or have it stolen.

Which I need to spend some serious time with so I can learn to use it for more than just email and data base updates.

Ball and chain.  Nice ball and chain, but still...ball and chain...

It is raining.  Again.  Yet.  Still.

Some are forecasting that it will turn to freezing rain by morning.

Some are saying it will not drop below 33 F, so probably no ice.

Wish I knew who will turn out to be right.  I could sleep in if it's cold enough.

I am enjoying the Christmas tree.  Did the full decoration with the little incandescent lightbulbs, that can be removed and the sockets used for other things.  Like ornament spinners.

The tree is very kinetic...spinning, bubbling, twinkling.

Funny how it feels like it's been up most of the year.

December is going by awfully fast...

Snapshots 10/26/13

Posted by Lisa Laree to Beer Lahai Roi

Last night was the annual Girls Ministry sleepover; as we have done for a number of years now, the teen girls (grades 6-12) split from the younger girls.

Some years we just split for part of the evening, but this year we basically had a whole separate event at the same time.

We started the evening by attending a local concert featuring Casting Crowns.

Wow.

Then we went back to church; I did the devo portion first, since we had a girl who had to leave early and I wanted to make sure she got the 'lesson' of the evening, too.

It all worked out to talk about the lies the enemy tells us.

Then they watched a movie...and I hid treasure hunt clues around the church (had to wait for other ministries happening to finish and get cleared out).

Then the girls did a flashlight treasure hunt.

Wasn't going to do it this year, but I had a flash of inspiration about having them look for jewels to put on crowns on which they'd written the truth to counter the lie of the enemy...anyway, we did it again.

And I messed up again.  I gotta get some help doing this, if only to have a second pair of eyes looking at stuff to catch oversights.

After everyone found their jems and I doled out the 'prize' candy,  we watched the Official Every Year Movie, Princess Bride.

That movie finished up about 5:30.  The girls all dozed off; the other teen chaperone and I wandered out into the lobby and watched the sun come up.

I failed utterly to take pictures of the evening, only getting a couple of pics at the concert.

I wanted one of all the girls with their crowns. Forgot.

In the process of planning and preparing, involving, among other things, wrestling a bench seat back into our minivan and hunching over a table cutting rectangles out of poster board to run through the die cutter and turn into crowns, I have done pretty much every bad thing in the book to my back.

Ice pack 20 on/20 off.  Repeat till the ice packs are tepid slush.

Thinking really hard about seeing if I can use some of my comp time for recovery time next week.  I could use a couple of days to just breath.

And visit the chiropractor. ;-)

Snapshot 8/17/12

Yesterday was our 32nd wedding anniversary.

32 years is a lot of years;  hard to believe it has been that many, or that our kids are as old as they are.

Makes that line in 'Sunrise, Sunset' really profound, talking about kids, 'I don't remember growing older; when did they?'

I'm still playing catch up from two-out-of-three weeks of travel in July, both at home and at work.

And the Girl's Ministry advancement/awards celebration is Wednesday night; we're about to start again with a bunch of fresh faces in the classroom.

Which is already full.

Gonna be interesting.

Got one more weekend trip coming up next week; The Princess and I are going back home to attend my niece's wedding.

Also gonna be interesting.

Maybe by Labor Day weekend I can actually catch my breath...

Snapshot 7/28/12

I keep thinking I'm going to have a chance to catch up on...lots of things...once I get past (fill in the blank).

Only that stupid blank keeps updating.

Survived a fundraiser cookie baking marathon today.

Did you know there are actual adult American women who have NEVER baked cookies from scratch?

One of them can no longer say that after assisting us!

Our teen girls clubs baked well over 1,000 cookies today; they're in 500 sandwich bags, with anywhere from 2 - 6 cookies in a bag.

Depending upon how big the cookies were and who was bagging them.

We're hoping that we'll have 500 folks at church tomorrow who are willing to donate a buck for a bag and support one of our own young ladies, who is going to be spending a year with the girls at Stella's Voice in Moldova.

We had a little mixup with the ingredients; one batch of chocolate chip cookies got made w/instant bananna cream pudding instead of instant vanilla pudding.

It took us a while to figure out why they tasted funny; ultimately a quick check of the trash can confirmed the suspicion that it was the pudding.

Sometimes those things happen when multiple folks are buying ingredients.

But they actually aren't too bad, once you know what happened, and we now have a new exotic cookie flavor...'Banana Chocolate Chip'.

Which we have packaged at 4 or 5 to a bag.

Can I just say that one of these is very helpful when making quadruple batches of cookies?

Pity the only apron I could lay my hands on was the Christmas one...

Snapshot 7/13/12

I turned 53 this week.

So I got a haircut today.

Nothing radical; just trimming back the frizzy overdried bits.

I also took The Flute Player shopping for clothes for youth camp next week, which is at the beach..

I'm taking girls from my Wednesday class to Girls' Ministry camp next week.

It is NOT at the beach.

Part time employees do not get vacation time; I basically worked double this week to make up for the time I took off last week for the 4th of July; I will repeat that scenario twice in the next 4ish weeks to make up for the trip to girls' camp and a trip back home.

Where I will attend my 35 year class reunion.

I just noticed the numbers...53 years old, 35 year reunion.

Hm.

Snapshot 6-8-12

The thing about missing the appointment with the 'new post' screen too many days in  a row is that one is overly tempted to begin the next post with an apology and an explanation.

Which, if one is a daily blogger, is probably just fine.

But, if one is a 'hanging on to the blogging discipline by the bare ends of my fingernails' blogger, then that sorta means that the blog turns into a lament of a busy life and lost opportunities.

But that need to explain creates serious writers block.  Serious. Writer's. Block.  It's really hard to get past it.

To the point where I read a phrase on another blog ...and I apologize, because I don't remember which one...that resonated with me. In effect, the writer wondered if she had used all her words up.

I realized that's what I felt like, and it made me sad.  Surely not.  Surely I have not said everything I have to say about life and faith and growing.  Surely the well does not have a bottom.

Then I realized that the thing that was bottling up the posts was the Need to Explain.

Just this morning, because it is Friday, the day that I do my best to blog if I can at all, I had a flash of inspiration.

An agreement, if you will, between me and you guys, my faithful, greatly appreciated readers.

When life gets busy and I can't get to the New Post screen as often as I like, I'm just gonna post a 'word shapshot' of what's going on.  And you'll understand that I'm just trying to hold on to the discipline.  And I'm not happy that I am not blogging, but, well, you do what you gotta do.

So.  Today's snapshot.

Sketchy internet connections...um, unpleasant digestive ailment earlier in the week...work brought home to do...spilled soda leaving me with a sticky floor, even after wet-jetting it TWICE, so it's mop-and-bucket time...out of town guests arriving in about 4 hours...laundry...vacuum cleaner dismantle and repair...deep breaths and remembering that what is important is the time spent with loved ones, not how perfect everything is.

Now.  We'll see if that clears the blockage. ;-)
