Or are you one of the noble folks who will be serving meals to people who have neither a grandma's house nor a dining room? We'll be at a daughter and son-in-law's. The rest of the children, and my mother, are getting together with other relatives.

2) What is one thing that you are thankful for that the folks who will be around your table might think is silly? I'm thankful that every Thanksgiving we celebrate is a little different - we're with a different child, or there is a new face at the table, or my husband and I are off on our own.
3) Do you have a set menu every year, one that varies not, or are you someone who likes to try new dishes for the holiday? There's usually someting new and different. This year my daughter and son-in-law are hosting, and want to serve prime rib. So I'm bringing turkey, dressing and apple pie, for the traditionalists.

4) Will a parade be any part of your Thanksgiving? It's on in the background.

5) A couple of years ago, I read an internet post by folks who immigrated to the US from England, who asked their neighbors what they were supposed to do on Thanksgiving. As they told the story, everyone instructed them to 'eat turkey and watch football.' How would you answer their question? Thanksgiving is a family gathering. "Family" can be relatives by blood or marriage, or siblings of the spirit, or just two of us and loving thoughts of our children. We share a meal (usually turkey) with gratitude. That's Thanksgiving.

6) Will there be anything on your Thanksgiving table that would seem odd or unusual to folks who do not know your traditions? My daughter is serving prime rib this Thanksgiving, because being together is more important than the main course.

7) How do you prefer to express your thanksgiving? Do you share around the table, list it as the meal is blessed, keep it private between you and God, or...?
I try to keep a running conversation with God going all the time, so I can express my thanks privately, but constantly.
8) Have you put up Christmas decorations yet, or do you keep Thanksgiving separate from Christmas (or Hanukkah, if that applies...)?
The Christmas decorations don't come down from the attic until the Thanksgiving decorations go up, and I start playing Christmas carols on the day after Thanksgiving (not counting the chorus and choir music that gets practiced starting much earlier).
9) What is one standout memory you have of Thanksgiving when you were a kid?
My Grandma always worked on Thanksgiving. She was a swing shift linotype operator at the newspaper. I remember Mom packing her turkey sandwigh and pie in her lunch, as she would leave the family gathering around 3PM. SOmetimes the first slice of turkey went into her sandwich.

10) Do you do family portraits at Thanksgiving?
No - we do our family portraits at weddings, at least in recent years.
11) What is the Thanksgiving weather forecast for your area? Is it typical?
Astonishingly, this Thanksgiving was dry and almost sunny. Definitely not typical Seattle weather for late November. It is often quite stormy. Once the floating bridge sank.

12) White meat or dark? Or? White meat AND dark. But it's really all about the sides.

Terri B'Hymernoreply@blogger.com
